In the damp, cold winter, Abigail struggled to make the Executive Mansion (later called the White House) a home for her husband, five-year-old granddaughter Susanna, and President Adams's secretary, William Smith Shaw. The new capital city, carved out of the Maryland and Virginia wilderness, was not ready because of the immense demand for goods with all the new government arrivals, and the lack of local suppliers for even basic items.
